All hams on deck!

Piles and piles of cards to sort

Hamfest Saturday in Keaau

The Big Island International Hamfest will be Saturday, April 11, at the Keaau Community Center.

Stu Johnson said there may also be another one in the October- November time frame in Waimea. According to Ron Hashiro, the Emergency ARC on Oahu is planning on having a Hamfest/Swapmeet on Nov. 14.

Saturday's swap meet will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year BIARC is the lead club. The plans are for next year's event to be earlier (perhaps February) since the past-scheduled month of October is just too congested and during hurricane season. It is hoped that by changing the date, we will have better weather and perhaps attendees from the mainland.

On Saturday, there will be the normal swap meet, card checking, refreshments, prizes and VE testing in the afternoon. Admission is free, with donations and registration at the door. Parking may be limited, so try to come early. Early set up will be at 8 a.m.

Club volunteers turn out to sort 9,000 QSL cards for Hawaii hams

Richard and I returned from New Zealand on March 14 after spending a month on the cruise ship Holland America Amsterdam and then 38 days in New Zealand. Needless to say, when we arrived home I was not expecting to have almost 9,000 QSL cards waiting to be sorted, as I had made arrangements to have it done while we were away. I knew that I could not handle that monumental task at this time with everything else that had to be done here at home. So we arranged to have a card sorting party here at the house on March 21.  It took us from 9 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. to do the initial sort. I would like to thank the following hams for all the hard work they did. Ted, NH6YK; John, KH6DLK; Bob, AH6J, who even gave up a golf game; Joe, KH6GA, Vicki, N4WV; Rick, WH6LU; Lloyd, KH6LC; Ben, NH7D; Curt, AH6RE; Leigh, WH6DZX; and myself, NH7FY. All of the above hams are now considered trained QSL card sorters. Mahalo for a great day.                                  Barbara, NH7FY
